He was preceded in death by his parents, August \"Bus\" and Rosa Lee Thompson; three brothers, James, Steve and Johnny Thompson; three sisters, Margaret Westfield, Ella Mae Latham and Edna Thompson; and his wife, Margie Marie Thompson.
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Sophia and Edward Johnson of Texas, Chris and Karen Thompson of Knoxville, Tracey Thompson and Linda and Brian Howard, all of Atlanta, Ga., Zina and Ronnie Carter of Knoxville, and Teresa and Bobby Hopkins of Atlanta, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary and Eugene Winton of Athens, Marcie and Robert Newton of Savannah, Ga., and Teresa and Sherman Huff of Fayetteville, N.C.; three brothers, Thomas and Wanda Thompson of Georgetown, William Thompson of Etowah, and Calvin Thompson of Athens; one sister-in-law, Madra Lynn Thompson of Cleveland; and a host of other family and friends.
The body may be viewed from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Patton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Edward S. Robinson and Bishop-Elect Bobby Hopkins Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Patton Funeral Home of Cleveland is in charge of arrangements.
