Charles \"Charlie Ben\" Hughes, 62, of Athens, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at Parkwest Medical Center.
A native of Monroe County, a former resident of Blount County and a resident of Athens since 1976, he was a son of the late Lonnie and Lena Mae \"Tootsie\" Koons Hughes, and was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Ruby Pearman; and three brothers, Howard Hughes, Tony Hughes and Clarence \"Scrap\" Hughes.
He was of the Baptist faith, was an employee of Damy Industries and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a giving person and his organs were donated to help others.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Cathy Hughes; one son, Nathan Hughes of Athens; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Obie and Anna Hughes of Vonore, and Mack and Faye Hughes of Maryville; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Betty and Grady Whitehead of Tallassee, and Ruth Jenkins and Ruby Hughes, both of Maryville; one grandson, Christian Hughes; one brother-in-law and his wife, the Rev. Bill and Patty Pearman of Riceville; and special friends, Charles and Verlene Sargarent.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Parkway Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Pearman officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.
