Anthony C. \"Tony\" Barnes Sr., 65, of Athens, passed away, Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A native of Thomasville, Ga., and resident of McMinn County most of his life, he was a son of the late Buford Clyde and Vessie Lee Nesmith Barnes. He was of the Baptist faith and was a Baptist minister and was a former employee of Gray Epperson Ford. He was a former member of the U.S. Army, having served in the Vietnam Conflict, and former member of the Elks Lodge and VFW.

Survivors include one son, Anthony Clyde Barnes Jr. of Athens; one daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Michael Elkins of Athens; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Dennis Calvin Barnes of Riceville, and Thomas Lamar and Mary Alice Griffin of Louisiana; and two grandchildren, Sierra Barnes and Nicholas Wolfe.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Ascension Life Fellowship with the Rev. Van Elkins officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday prior to the service at the church.
