John Franklin Hitson, 64, of Sweetwater, passed away Saturday morning, Dec. 29, 2012, at home.
John was a 1968 graduate of Sweetwater High School, and he served in the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1973. He served in law enforcement for more than 28 years holding positions such as police officer, detective and police chief serving Monroe and Loudon counties. John also served as Director on the 9th Judicial Drug Task Force and worked for Sanford and Son Bail Bonds. He was a lifelong member of the VFW Post 5156. He was a member of Union McMinn Baptist Church. He served as a board member for Westview Cemetery in Sweetwater until he passed. John coached little league softball, baseball, football and youth boxing for Sweetwater and Madisonville. He was an avid golfer, bowler and loved to dance. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Hitson; his mother, Mamie Chestine Hitson; twin sister, Ida Louise Hitson; and brother, Virgil Hitson.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Courtney and Craig Self of Madisonville, and Cody and Tony Hayes of Linden, Va.; grandchildren, Cade and Cooper Self, Josie and Tino Hayes, Harley Allen and John Brady Anderson; three sisters, Jesse Miller and Betty McCulloch, both of Sweetwater, and Kay Steele of Madisonville; two brothers, Sam Hitson of Sweetwater, and Jack Hitson of Brentwood; special nieces, Jennifer and Madison Robinson and Lisa and Savannah McCulloch, all of Sweetwater; numerous other nieces, nephews, friends and family who loved John dearly; and a special friend of many years, Jimmy Lee Bellamy.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Monday at Biereley-Hale Chapel with the Rev. Doug Alexander, the Rev. Ted Watson and the Rev. Scott Cardin officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Westview Cemetery with military honors by Sweetwater VFW Post 5156 and DAV Chapter 93.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
