Douglas J. Davis Sr., 91, of Athens and formerly of Deckerville, Mich., died on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at Life Care Center of Athens.



He was born July 6, 1921, in Deckerville, the son of the late Clarence and Sophia Reinelt Davis. He married Hazel Matthews on March 8, 1952, in Deckerville; she preceded him in death on Nov. 14, 1979. He then married Lorene Martin on Feb. 13, 1982, and moved to Bradenton, Fla. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Peacock of Florida; and two stepdaughters, Deloris J. Meeuwisz and Elberta Womac.



He owned and operated the Davis Lumber Co. with his father. He started the Flying D Sports Center on M25 north and east of Deckerville in 1966. He later sold that, along with the lumber yard, and retired in 1970. He was one of the first Ski-Doo snowmobile dealers in Michigan. Also, he designed and built Mini-Indy race cars and raced them on a track in the summertime and snowmobiles in the winter at the Sports Center. He was an avid sportsman, and was a certified NRA instructor. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US. Army in the China-Burma-India Theater.



Survivors include his wife, Lorene Davis of Athens; his son, Douglas J. Davis Jr. of Harbor Beach, Mich.; his daughter, Melody Davis of Wyoming; a stepdaughter, Barbra Monzo of Mesick, Mich; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.



Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Apsey Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert A. Srock officiating. Burial will be in Downing Cemetery in Deckerville.



The family will receive friends from 2 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday.
