Russell Scott Bronson, 93, of Athens, died suddenly on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
He was born on Sept. 2,1919, in Greenfield, Mass. A native of Northamton, Mass., he was the son of the late Harold Scott and Leneitta Rose Scott Bronson of Mill Valley, Calif. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Marie Dragon Bronson; one brother, Chandler Bronson; one sister, Harriet Nation; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen O\'Neil Bronson; and one grandson, Michael McCullough.
Russell served during World War II, where he was involved in decoy operations off the coast of France prior to the D-Day invasion. He was also trained in the Navy as an advanced sonar operator, which led to his interest in electrical engineering upon which he obtained his degree cum laude at UMass in 1949.
After the Navy, he worked for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft and General Instruments in New England until 1972, upon transferring to Magnavox in Greeneville, until his retirment. While working for General Instruments, he traveled extensively, including Taiwan and Portugal. He was an avid photographer, collecting a library of photos and movies of family and travel. Russ and Marie were involved in advanced round and square dances for most of their married years together. He was a resident of Athens since 2001, and enjoyed his last year-and-a-half at Morning Pointe in Athens.
Survivors include one son, Russell Arthur Bronson of Niskayuna, N.Y.; three daughters and one son-in-law, Cynthia Bronson of Athens, Martha Bronson of Portland, Maine, and Lisa and Carl Williams of Athens; 10 grandchildren and spouses, Wendy McCullough, Todd and Michelle Bronson, Melissa and Carson Moule, Lisa Ann Bronson, Scott and Kristin Chapman, Darryl Chapman, Jeffrey and Sylvia Castonguay, Alison Castonguay, Nathan White, Nathan Williams and Hayden Williams; 13 great-grandchildren, Jaclyn McCullough, Kaitlyn McCullough, Kyle Parks, Abigail Parks, Taylor Bronson, Nicholas Bronson, Christopher Bronson, John Russell, Jennifer Moule, Sarah and Christopher Chapman, Ansley Chapman and Harper Chapman; and several nieces and nephews.
A full military honors memorial service at Massachusetts Veteran National Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, Mass., will follow at a later date.
