Bonnie Mae Green Mabes, 81, of Etowah, died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at her residence surrounded by her family. She is now in the arms of her Lord and Savior.
A native and lifelong resident of the Claxton and Coghill communities, she was the oldest daughter of the late Toy and Bertha Lunsford Green. She retired from Morgan Manufacturing and Lake Ocoee Inn Restaurant and was a member of Coghill Baptist Church. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 5146 in Athens.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lona Housley and Elizabeth Gagnon; two brothers, J.L. and Charles Green; her mother-in-law, Sarah \"Granny\" Evans; and one daughter-in-law, Mary Mabes.
Survivors include her loving husband of 62 years, Arthur Elwood Mabes of Etowah; two daughters and sons-in-law, Winona and Larry Howard and Renee and Jimmy Bain, all of Athens; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Allen and Keith Mabes, both of Etowah, and Doug and Pam Mabes of Athens; six grandchildren, Lance Howard of Wisconsin, Angie Tate and her husband, Adam, Chris Mabes, Beth Mager and her husband, Kevin, and Timmy Odum, all of Athens, and Chelsey Bain of Knoxville; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Barbara Ann Green of Etowah; and a special cousin, Jean Sopshire of North Carolina.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Caris Hospice for their compassionate care.
Funeral services were 7 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Serenity Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Stephens and the Rev. Joe Hatcher officiating. Graveside services were 2 p.m. Sunday at Coghill Baptist Church Cemetery with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
