Leslie Ross Cox, 70, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013, in Fort Pierce, Fla.
He was born on June 13, 1942, in Athens to the late Eugene and Violet Cox. He had resided in Port St. Lucie, Fla., as well as in Cleveland.
He earned his bachelor\'s degree in history with a minor in English from Bryan College in 1964 and continued his education by obtaining his master\'s degree in education from Middle Tennessee State University in 1968.
He was an educator in Tennessee for 31 years, serving as a teacher at McMinn County High School, as a Cleveland State Community College administrator and as assistant principal and principal for various schools in the Cleveland City School system.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Athens and Cleveland, as well as Westside Baptist in Fort Pierce, Fla., serving as a Sunday school teacher. He was a member of Studebaker Driver\'s Club and various educational organizations.
He was an avid reader, an owner of antique cars and a sports fan. He enjoyed playing basketball and volleyball because of his tall 6\'4 frame and supported the Tennessee Vols, win or lose.
Above all of these things, the joy of his life was his grandchildren, Anna Kate and Knox Porter Beane.
In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Donald E. Cox.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 48 years, Beth; one daughter, Janelle Beane and her husband, Jonathan, of Greenville, Miss.; one son, Jeremy Cox and his wife, LeeAnn, of Nashville; one sister, Ellen Conrad of Athens; and two grandchildren, Anna Kate and Knox Porter Beane.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Cleveland. Funeral services will follow the visitation.
Burial will follow the service in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Athens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Bible Society, P.O. Box 96812, Washington, D.C., 20090-6812.
