Pearl Joe Borden Ballew

Pearl Joe Borden Ballew, known by her family and friends as \"Miss Pearl,\" 94, of Athens, died Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at her residence.
A native of Monroe County and a lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Andy and Nellie Lee Kirkland Borden and was preceded in death by her husband, Riley Robert Ballew Sr.; her children, Dalphne Kennedy, Curtis Dean Ballew, Marquetta Bonita Mattheson, Hershel Ray Ballew and Douglas Napoleon Ballew; and several brothers and sisters.
She was a former employee of Jiffy Markets, where she worked up until her retirement at age 92. She was a member of Athens Christian Church.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Gerwonda and Neil Smith of Athens; two sons and daughters-in-law, Riley R. and Shirley Ballew of Tampa, Fla., and David and Shirley Ballew of Athens; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Annie Lee Derrick of Etowah.
Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home with the Rev. Glenn Gregg officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday in McMinn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Andy Smith, Nicholas Rouse, Matthew Rouse, Stevey Rouse, Joe Ballew and Matthew Ballew. Honorary pallbearers will be Seth Phillips and Wesley Adams.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
