John W. \"Doug\" Glass, 90, of Athens, died Saturday night, March 16, 2013, at his residence.
A native of Guntersville, Ala., he was a son of the late Oscar and Ester Glass, and was also preceded in death by two sisters, Edna Riddle and Nannie Wade; and three brothers, Ernest, Gardner and L.D. Glass.
He was a member of West End Baptist Church. He was a Mason and a member of Kerbela Shrine Temple of Knoxville.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He owned and operated Glass Grocery Store on Depot Hill in Athens for many years and later was associated with Peterbilt Truck Company for 15 years until his retirement.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Jane Glass of Athens; one sister, Virginia Cook of Guntersville, Ala.; and one brother, Curtis Glass of Georgia.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Smith Funeral & Cremation Services with the Rev. Jimmy Price and the Rev. Allen Watson officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in McMinn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Burkett Witt, Jerry Stephens, Frankie Richesen, J.C. Nipper, Ray Johnson and Norman Eaton.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
