Rev. Raymond Casteel, 70, of Riceville, died Monday, April 15, 2013, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A native and resident of McMinn County all his life, he was a son of the late Wilmer Ray and Vila Jane Ditmore Casteel. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Edith Blankenship; and one brother, Ray Newton Casteel.
He was retired from Hiwassee Builders Supply and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He had pastored Five Point Baptist Church in Decatur for 10 years and was most recently a member of Valley Road Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, W. Joyce Casteel of Riceville; one brother, Don Casteel and his wife, Opal, of Athens; two sisters-in-law, Rachel Casteel of Athens, and Patti Smith and her special friend, Scottie Knox; five brothers-in-law and their spouses, Eddie and Denise Blankenship of Athens, Carroll and Marie Blankenship and Freddie and Janie Blankenship, all of Etowah, Richard and Jane Blankenship of Cleveland, and Jimmy and Linda Blankenship of Griffin, Ga.; special nieces who thought of him as a papaw, Cayci Nabors and her husband, Bradley, of Niota, and Brittany and Eric Cagle and Robin Zarnekei and her husband, Ali, all of Athens; and several other nieces, nephews, cousins and church family of Valley Road Baptist Church whom he loved endlessly.
Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Valley Road Baptist Church with the Rev. David Coffman and the Rev. Doug Greene officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the Valley Road Baptist Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Eddie Tillman, Danny Crass, Eric Cagle, Bradley Nabors, Daryl Ditmore and Tony Casteel. Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Hazelwood, Charles Jackson, Henry Nabors, Glenn Jackson and Jerry Fain.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
