William Vernis \"Bill\" Whited, 83, of Athens, died Saturday, June 22, 2013, at his residence.
He was a native of Union County, a former resident of Sweetwater and a resident of McMinn County since 1954. He retired from Bowater Paper Company after 39 1/2 years of service, having worked in the Power and Steam Department. He was a member of Pope Avenue Baptist Church and attended Eastanallee Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Navy.
A son of the late James Henderson and Thelma Estel Sharp Whited, he was also preceded in death by one son, Jack Edward Whited; and two brothers, Calvin V. Whited and James Varnell Whited.
Survivors include his beloved companion of 20 years, Jane W. Brock of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, William Michael and Tammy Whited of Canton, N.C.; one brother, Ralph Vernon Whited of Sweetwater; three sisters, Helen Robbins of Sweetwater, Vivian L. Grissinger of Springfield, Va., and Vera Hyatt of Athens; one grandson, William Michael \"Mich\" Whited Jr.; one granddaughter, Jackie Whited; other grandchildren and their spouses, Hannah and Bonnie Whitley, Kevin and Sheree Brock and Trevor Brock; special friends, Frank Barton and Elwood Barnes; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Whited and the Rev. Oran Creasman officiating. Burial will follow in McMinn Memory Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Mich Whited, Kevin Brock, Eric Hyatt, Tony Stewart, Chuck Whited and Bill Robinson.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
