Nellie Goins Matthews, 72, of Athens, went to be with the Lord at 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at NHC Health Care of Athens.
She was a longtime member of Athens Church of Christ. She was very active as a former Sunday school teacher, chairperson of the Flower Ministry, member of the Ladies Evening Class and spent many Thursdays with her Christian brothers and sisters making bears for children in the community and region. Prior to the past two years, she also took active roles in the annual Vacation Bible School in varying roles of service.
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Mitchell and Janie Goins, and was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Don Matthews; and one brother, Delmer Goins.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and David Ferriss of Knoxville; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Linda and Bobby Crowden of Athens, Lois Lingerfelt of Athens, and Ina Jo and Reed Johnson of Englewood; three brothers and three sisters-in-law, Larry and Ann Goins of Athens, Curtis and Barbara Goins of Chattanooga, Jerry Goins of Madisonville, and Janice Goins of Athens; and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends visitation for Mrs. Matthews will be at the Athens Church of Christ, North Avenue, Athens, on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m., with the funeral following at 7 p.m.
Athens Church of Christ Ministers, Mark Littleton and Travis Irwin, will assist in leading the service. Special friend and caregiver, Jan Mayberry, will provide personal thoughts, and longtime family friend, Philip Womack, will conduct the eulogy.
Pallbearers will be David Ferriss, Lynn Grubb, Dallas Grubb, Luke Sewell, and her church elders, Ross Harrod, Mike Tallent and James Summers.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at McMinn Memory Gardens led by Travis Irwin. Friends and family wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Ziegler Funeral Home at 9 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Athens Church of Christ, 1016 North Ave., Athens, TN 37303.
