Lorena Strickland Gilliam
Sept. 22, 2013
Lorena Strickland Gilliam, 91, of Niota, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, at Willow Acres Home for Seniors.
A native of Maryville and longtime resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late James W. and Fannie Williams Strickland, and was also preceded in death by her husband, James L. Gilliam; a son, Donald Eugene Gilliam; a granddaughter, Stacy Rose McFall; a sister, Lavada Mantegna; and five brothers, Walter, Clarence, James, Frank and Bruce Strickland.
Lorena built her life around her husband, J.L., and their seven children and the laughter and love they both provided throughout the years at their home in Niota. She was our connection to the past and to our heritage. Her stories of the Depression, World War II and raising a family through the good times and the bad, richly colored our lives and taught us all the importance of faith, family and a place called home. She was a loving wife and mother, a loyal friend, a source of wisdom and encouragement to many, and filled our lives and our home with laughter, joy and love.
She was a member of Niota United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Wylda Jo and Val Jones and Carol Ann Hodge, all of Kingston; four sons and three daughters-in-law, James (Jim) and Glenna Gilliam and Steve and Donna Gilliam, all of Athens, Richard Gilliam of Farragut, and David and Michelle Gilliam of Knoxville; seven granddaughters, Dawn Burian, Julie Mackey, Amy Spears, Mallory Gilliam, Holly Gilliam, Haley Gilliam and Lindsey Borlace; six grandsons, Eric Gilliam, Robert (Buddy) Hodge, Jacob Gilliam, Alex Gilliam, Nathan Gilliam and Halen Gilliam; eight great-grandchildren; and former daughter-in-law, Billie Gilliam of Niota.
A funeral service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Kelly officiating.
Interment will be 11 a.m. Friday in Niota Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Willson, David Snead, Bill Snyder, Sam Hicks and Marion Gilliam.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Willow Acres for their compassionate and loving care of Lorena.
The family suggests memorials be made to Niota United Methodist Church, 10 W. Main Street, Niota, TN 37826; or to the Alzheimer\'s Association, NE/SE TN Chapter, 7625 Hamilton Park Drive, Suite 22, Chattanooga, TN 37421.
