Estella Mae Hurst Smith, 86, was born June 5, 1927. She went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Sept. 20, 2013, at her residence.
Estella retired from Athens Products and had worked for many families in Athens before working at Westinghouse/Athens Products. Estella was a dedicated member of Lane Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, where she served a deaconess and played the piano until her health would not allow her to play anymore. She was a past president of the Missionary Society and always supported her church. Estella grew up in the Piney Community of Sweetwater, and Mt. Cumberland Presbyterian Church was her home church until her marriage to Rufus Smith. As a young girl, she played the piano for many area churches. She was a Past Worthy Matron of the Bright Light Order of Eastern Star #278.
Estella was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Inez Raglin Hurst; three sons, Duane, Garry and Curtis Smith; sister, Viola Smith; brothers, Samuel Hurst and Thomas L. Hurst; and sisters-in-law, Christine (Dudley) Taylor, Inez Smith and Ellen Morris.
Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 67 years, Rufus J. Smith of Niota; son and daughter-in-law, Ervin E. (Elaine) Smith of Athens; daughter-in-law, Grace Smith; grandchildren, Duane (Sladie) Smith of Germany, Robert Smith of South Carolina, Zelda Smith of Michigan, Willie Smith of Texas, LaTasha (Chris) Bryant of Knoxville, Tammy and Barbara Smith of New York, Cassandra Smith of Georgia, Aaron Smith of Sweetwater, Daren (Kendra) Smith of San Diego, Calif., Shawna Smith of Sweetwater, Julie Smith of Madisonville, Reggie Smith of Sweetwater, Jamichael Smith of Niota, Nisha (Erica) Smith of Sweetwater, and Erin Cowley of Spring City; 32 great-grandchildren; a host of other nieces and nephews, friends and family; and devoted caregivers and helpers, Abbie Davis, Joe Lenior, Veronica and Roger Clark and Lisa Ramsey.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m. at Lane Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church with pastor, the Rev. J.D. Howell, and the Rev. Angela Billingsley officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.
Visitation by friends will begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at M.D. Dotson & Sons Funeral Home of Athens.
