Daniel (Dan) Thomas Moates, 89, of Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville.
Born in Etowah on May 9, 1924, he spent most of his years in Harriman. He was married to Thelma Duff Moates for almost 30 years. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Moates.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy on the USS Brazos during World War II, and later retired from a lifelong career at BellSouth.
Dan was an avid runner, cyclist and hiker, running in many local marathons as well as hiking the Appalachian Trail and Mt. Rainer.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Moates; brothers, James Moates, and Joe Moates and wife, Elizabeth; a sister, Catherine Elkins; his children, Debra West of Louisville, and Michael T. Moates of Maryville; stepchildren, Ken, Jeff, John and Joel Evans; grandchildren, Miranda, Micki, Heather, Chance, Kristi, Stephanie, Lindsay, Justin, Josh, Jacob, Chance, Jay, Alexa, Isaac and Matt; as well as many other family members and friends.
He will be laid to rest with full military honors at the East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville.
Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 30, at the East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson\'s research such as the Michael J. Fox Foundation or another similar foundation.
