Basil H. Nunley Sr., 90, of Riceville, died peacefully at his home with family and friends by his side on Friday night, Dec. 6, 2013.
A member of the Lords Church, attending the Riceville Church of Christ, where he was an elder. Basil was preceded in death by his parents, J.M. and Lula Malone Nunley; a brother, Ralph J. Nunley; and a grandson, David Monroe Nunley.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Dorothy Boyd Nunley; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Ann Swafford and Rondal Swafford, Gail and Neal Womac, and Beth Nunley and Wayne McKeown; two sons and daughters-in-law, Basil \"Butch\" and Susie Nunley, and Greg and Sandy Nunley, all of Riceville; six grandchildren, Shyam Nunley, Chad Swafford, Basil III \"Burt\" Nunley, and Nicholas Nunley, all of Riceville, Shane Nunley of Decatur, and Craig Swafford and his wife, Stacey, of Dayton; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends who he truly loved.
Basil was a proud Marine serving in the Pacific during World War II. He was very active in the community, putting God first and family and friends before himself.
He was a Scoutmaster to Boy Scout Troop 119, who he loved. He wanted the boys to have good morals and character. They once hiked from Riceville up to Lake McKamey in Polk County. To this day it was a trip to remember.
Basil was a charter member of Wood Memorial Hospital, serving 39 years as a board member. He was a co-founder of the Riceville Utility District, charter member of the Riceville Ruritan Club, president of the Mouse Creek Water Shed at Riceville and was the first male president to be elected at the Riceville Elementary School.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Riceville Cemetery Fund c/o SouthEast Bank, P.O. Box 1806, Athens, TN 37371-1806.
A funeral service will be 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 9, in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with Minister Donnie Cable officiating.
The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home prior to the service.
Family and friends will meet at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in Riceville Cemetery for the committal service with military honors at the graveside provided by the U.S. Marine Corps.
Members of his Boy Scout Troop 119 will serve as pallbearers.
This Marine has fought his last battle and won.
