Bessie Coleman Hammonds, 83, of the Clay Hill community in Athens, died Wednesday night, Dec. 11, 2013, at Life Care Center of Athens.
A native of Tellico Plains and a longtime resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Lush and Meadie Lynn Coleman, and was also preceded in death by three sisters, Gladys Edmonson, Esther Harris and Elsie Phillips; and a brother, Cecil Coleman.
She was a member of Deity Baptist Church and attended Clay Hill Baptist Church. She had been associated with Ridge Textile Company and Niota Textile Company until her retirement.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Wayne Thompson of Riceville, and Angie and Thomas Lynn of Loudon; one son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Cindy Hammonds of Englewood; four granddaughters and five grandsons; 17 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lena Wilson of Athens.
Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Smith Funeral & Cremation Services with the Rev. Thomas Lynn officiating. Family and friends will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at South Liberty Cemetery for the committal service.
Pallbearers will be nephews and grandsons.
The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home prior to the service.
